The inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games have kicked off in Beijing, China, attracting participants from 16 countries, including the US, Germany, and Japan. Robot athletes are set to compete in various events such as athletics, football, dance, and martial arts.

Organisers explain that the event aims to trial and refine current robotics technology. They note that sports serve as an effective way to test a robot’s decision-making, motor skills, and control systems, with potential applications in real-life environments like factories and homes.

The competition is part of China’s broader ambition to establish itself as a global leader in humanoid robotics. The government has outlined a national plan to develop a world-class humanoid industry by 2027.
