A passenger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas was injured on Thursday after an acrylic waterslide broke open, leaving a large hole in the bottom of the tubular ride.

According to a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson, the adult guest was provided medical care after a section of acrylic glass detached as they passed through the slide. The guest, now in stable condition, is receiving treatment for their injuries. The slide has been closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.

Footage captured by bystanders shows water gushing from the damaged section, which passes over the ship’s deck.

Royal Caribbean’s website states that Icon of the Seas features six waterslides within its Category 6 waterpark — described as the “largest waterpark at sea” — located on decks 16 and 17.

Safety Measures for Passenger Waterslide Experiences

The vessel, which embarked on its maiden voyage in January 2024, is the world’s largest cruise ship in operation and can carry nearly 10,000 passengers and crew at full capacity.
