Barcelona have officially removed Marc-André ter Stegen from his role as club captain, the Spanish champions announced in a statement released on Thursday.

The decision comes in the wake of disciplinary proceedings initiated against the German goalkeeper, although the club did not elaborate on the nature of the offense.

In the interim, vice-captain Ronald Araújo has been promoted to assume captaincy duties, as confirmed by the club.

> “Decision follows disciplinary proceedings opened against Marc-André ter Stegen. During this period, the duties of first captain will be assumed by the current vice-captain, Ronald Araújo,” the statement read.

The situation is believed to have escalated after Ter Stegen underwent back surgery last month and announced he would be sidelined for three months. Reports indicate that his handling of the matter angered club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco, further prompting the leadership reshuffle.

Ter Stegen’s demotion marks a rare internal shake-up at the Catalan club, especially involving a long-serving player.
