The Nigerian government has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to X.com, demanding the removal of a tweet by activist and politician Omoyele Sowore that criticized President Bola Tinubu.

In the controversial post, Sowore wrote:

“This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The Department of State Services (DSS), in a letter dated September 6, 2025, described the tweet as misleading and capable of inciting violence, spreading hate speech, and threatening national security.

Signed by Mr. B. Bamigboye on behalf of the DG, the letter accused Sowore of making statements that could embarrass the president, provoke chaos, and ridicule Nigeria globally.

Citing multiple laws, including the Criminal Code Act, the Cybercrime Act 2025, and the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act 2022, the DSS insisted both Sowore and X.com could be held criminally liable if the post remained online.

“The demand is unequivocal with its attendant consequences. Should you fail, neglect, and refuse to comply, the Federal Government of Nigeria will be compelled to take far-reaching measures,” the DSS warned.

As of the time of filing this report, X.com had not yet responded to the Nigerian government’s directive.
